Opening a bank account in Spain

Many people wonder if it is possible to open a bank account in Spain if you are a foreigner. The answer is yes, though for some nationalities the process can be challenging. What most banks do is check if a potential client meets all the necessary requirements.

These are general requirements to open a bank account in big branches as BBVA, Banco Santander, Caixa Bank if you are a foreigner:

  • Be of legal age (18 years or older)
  • Have the necessary documentation. This should be (depending on the case):
  • DNI: for foreigners who have Spanish nationality
  • NIE: for EU Spanish residents
  • TIE: for non-EU residents in Spain
  • Passport: to open a bank account in Spain as a foreigner

Due to the current economic and political situation in the world, banks started to ask for more information, they may request a payroll, an employment contract, or the latest income tax return paper. In most cases, non-EU citizens are asked to prove their income in euros or dollars.
