Welcome digital nomads!
If you’re a remote worker looking for a change of scenery, Digital Nomad Visa Spain is a fantastic opportunity to live and work in one of the most vibrant countries in Europe. This visa allows non-EU citizens to legally stay in Spain while continuing to work for foreign companies or as freelancers. Here’s what you need to know about obtaining the Digital Nomad Visa and how we can help you through the process.
Key Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa:
- Proof of Remote Work: You must be employed by a company located outside of Spain or work as a freelancer for clients who are mostly based outside the country.
- Income Requirement: You need to demonstrate that you earn enough income to support yourself. Currently, the minimum income requirement is around €2,300 per month.
- Contract or Freelancer Agreement: If you’re employed, you’ll need to show a work contract with a foreign company. Freelancers must show ongoing professional relationships with foreign clients.
- Professional Experience: You should have at least 3 years of work experience or relevant qualifications in your field.
- Private Health Insurance: You’ll need comprehensive health insurance that’s valid in Spain.
- Clean Criminal Record: A background check from your home country is required to show you have no criminal record.
The Beckham Law (Special Expat Tax Regime)
One of the biggest advantages of moving to Spain as a digital nomad is the potential to benefit from the Beckham Law, officially known as the Spanish Special Expat Tax Regime. This law allows eligible foreign workers, including those with a Digital Nomad Visa, to pay a flat tax rate of 24% on the first €600,000 of income earned annually, rather than Spain’s standard progressive tax rates, which can be much higher.
To qualify for the Beckham Law, you must:
- Be employed by a foreign company or work as a freelancer primarily for foreign clients.
- Have not been a Spanish tax resident in the last 10 years.
- Apply for the special tax regime within six months of registering in Spain.
This tax benefit can make living in Spain much more attractive for digital nomads, allowing you to keep more of your income while enjoying the country’s lifestyle.
Steps to Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa:
- Gather Your Documents: This includes proof of income, contracts or agreements with foreign employers or clients, health insurance, a clean criminal record, and your passport.
- Submit Your Application: You can apply for the Digital Nomad Visa either from a Spanish consulate in your home country or while you’re in Spain on a tourist visa.
- Wait for Approval: Processing times can vary, but once approved, you’ll be granted a visa that allows you to live and work in Spain for up to 12 months, with the possibility of renewal.
- Register in Spain: Once in Spain, you’ll need to register as a resident and apply for a foreigner’s identification number (NIE).
