How to get empadronamiento in Spain

Getting empadronamiento in Spain is the key procedure for any person who lives in this country, whether temporarily or permanently. This municipal registration certificate will testify to your residence in this or that particular town or city and serve as a basis for receiving healthcare, enrolling children in schools, opening bank accounts, and the completion of other administrative procedures.

Two Ways to get empadronamiento (register at the city hall)

You can do your empadronamiento online or in person at your local ayuntamiento. Each of these methods has different requirements:

Online Registration:

If you take the digital route, then you will be required to have a copy of your landlord's DNI or NIE, along with a signed authorization letter from them, giving you permission to register at their property. You'll also need your passport or ID. The online process differs across municipalities, in Barcelona you can access via Clave, idCat or digital certificate.

In-Person Registration:

Often, this is easier to do by physically going to the ayuntamiento office if you are unfamiliar with Spanish bureaucracy. Bring your passport or identification, rental contract, and photocopy of the property owner's DNI/NIE. Some municipalities may also require a recent utility bill. The staff verifies your documents on the spot and processes your registration.

Important Contract Consideration

By no means does every rental agreement permit empadronamiento registration. Some landlords-epecially with 11-month contracts, which are common for temporary rentals-do not allow tenants to register. This is often because of tax implications and/or rental regulations. Always check in advance with your property owner if they allow empadronamiento in their property and get their consent in writing to avoid problems when going to the appointment.
