You take over utilities in Spain from the previous tenant
In case you are taking over the utilities in Spain from the previous tenant, you need to make sure that all the previous payments have been made properly.
Even if they were not, don’t stress out because as a new tenant you are not responsible for paying them by law. However, you don’t want to have your electricity cut off or your gas turned off because of outstanding bills.
For this reason, make sure to communicate to your current utility providers that you are a new tenant or an owner of the property.
To do so, you will need to fill out an online form or call them directly. You’ll be asked for your NIE, address, and bank account number and to confirm that you are the new tenant/owner of the property. In most cases, they will also need an ID number of a previous tenant (You can find it either in your rental agreement or in the previous invoice). Main utility providers in Spain:

In case you rent an apartment for a shorter period of time, your landlord might include utility bills into the rental price. In this case, you don’t have to worry about it. Just make sure the bills are no more than 200 euros a month considering an average-sized (40-70m2) apartment.
Paying your bills
Normally, you pay your electricity, water, and gas bills every two months via transferencia (direct debit) from a Spanish bank account which is the most convenient option. However, you can also pay your bills via bank, post offices, or utility supplier’s offices.
